Single-leg stance test: eyes open, eyes closed
Your client stands on one leg with arms crossed on the chest. MovePath times it eyes open and eyes closed, on the left and right foot, and measures how much the pelvis sways while they hold.
Front viewUp to 3 tries per conditionResult in secondsAbout 3 min
What it measures
Time from the foot leaving the floor until it touches down, the arms uncross or the standing foot moves. Up to 45 seconds.
Four conditions (eyes open or closed, left or right foot) are timed separately, with up to three tries each; the longest is kept.
Alongside time, MovePath measures side-to-side movement of the pelvis and shoulder tilt. If the time stays the same but the sway drops, that is a change you can show too.
Where to put the phone
- Front view, head to toePhone upright on a tripod; the client faces the camera.
- Arms crossed on the chestThe lifted foot sits near the standing ankle without touching it.
- Add height for centimetresTo see sway in centimetres, add the client's height to their details.
What the report shows
- Time heldThe longest time in each of the four conditions.
- Position against peersFor age groups with reference data, a comparison with the average range for the same age and sex, such as "within the average range".
- SwaySide-to-side pelvic sway (average and range), shoulder tilt, and how many times larger the sway is with eyes closed. There's no reference data for sway, so it is compared only with the client's own records.
- Change since last timeOn a re-test, the first sentence states the change since last time, and a trend chart shows the same test over time.
- PhotosThree seconds after the foot lifts, face blurred. Taken only with the client's photo consent and kept only on the trainer's phone and in the PDF. Report links carry no photos.
- Test video ProRecord the test, replay it with joint angles, and play it side by side with the first one. Videos stay on the trainer's phone.
Reference data
Springer et al., normative values for the unipedal stance test (J Geriatr Phys Ther 2007) — ages 18–99. Means and standard deviations by age and sex, arms crossed, best of three, up to 45 seconds. Used for eyes-open and eyes-closed times separately.
Please note
MovePath is not a medical device. This test records measurements to guide exercise; it is not a diagnosis. App readings may differ from a goniometer, tape measure or stopwatch. Use them to compare the same client's first test with today's, measured the same way.
